Instead of shopping at crowded malls for gifts no one wants or needs, choose to #OptOutside on Black Friday and do
something fun together during the holiday weekend while supporting a good cause! Perfect for families looking for a
post-Thanksgiving activity or things to do over the long holiday weekend.
The event aims to be as green & sustainable as possible. Food scraps will be collected and composted. Please bring
your own reusable, refillable water bottles for pre- and post- race hydration. Refill stations provided. All swag and
awards will be reusable or sustainable in some way.
Founded in 2008, Plastic Free Delaware (aka Zero Waste First State) is a community-based, nonprofit organization
focused on making Delaware a better, cleaner, healthier place by reducing the use of single use plastic and encouraging
zero waste practices. With the help of our tireless volunteer corps, we provide educational programs and undertake
advocacy for policy changes at the federal, state level and local levels. In 2019 PFD founded YES!, the Youth
Environmental Summit , for Delaware high school students and the 6th annual YES! in 2025 was attended by 750+
students & teachers from 44 high schools and youth teams. In 2022, PFD launched the Delaware Community
Composting Initiative to reduce food waste and encourage organics composting. Participation in the Black Friday 5K
helps PFD continue its educational reach with these and other programs, and helps keep Delaware’s schools,
watersheds, and communities clean and healthy.
